Homestead Happenings

Annual meeting, raffle drawing, and fall program on Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at 6:30 p.m.

Please join us on September 26, when we will update you on what has been happening at the Homestead and share some of our plans for the upcoming year.  It is also time for electing board members with Dave Zepecki up for reelection this year.  We will be drawing the winners of our cash raffle, and while you don’t have to be present to win, if you are there you could be going home with a check in your pocket!  Reminder: Get your your raffle tickets in to us or bring them to the meeting.

The business portion of the meeting will be followed by a program by Judy Kesser, a retired educator who has become an avid advocate for the preservation of monarch butterflies.  Judy will provide insight into the annual migration that is taking place right now and will give you ideas on how to help this iconic species.  We are celebrating the fact that the Homestead has just become a Monarch Waystation and we will provide information on how you can enroll your yard in this program. Please be sure to join us for this chance to learn about monarch butterflies and socialize with your fellow Homestead members.  The meeting is free and open to the public and refreshments will be served.

On July 31, 2003, Stahl-Conrad Homestead, Inc., a non-profit historical society, purchased the property at 9724 West Forest Home Avenue.  View maps.  We are dedicated to creating a museum and preserving this homestead as a remnant of a bygone lifestyle. Read mission statement.

We welcome new and renewing members! Go to Membership.

The Homestead was featured in the front page story of the July 10, 2003 issue of the Hales Corners Village Hub.  Read the article.

The Homestead
The property includes an 1870s German farmhouse and adjacent land which was in the ownership of Hans Stahl and his descendants, the Conrads, from 1869 to 1986. The 2.5 acre site is a small portion of the original Stahl property.  MORE

In 2006 the Stahl-Conrad Homestead was designated a local historic landmark by the Village of Hales Corners.

Janesville Plank Road
The homestead land itself has great historical significance.  It is located on the former Janesville Plank Road, a route taken by early settlers as they sought fertile land southwest of Milwaukee.  The property represents what this area once was: small, quiet, agricultural.
